Did you know that the hammerhead shark is the most recent shark to evolve? Sharks have been around for over 450 million years, but the hammerhead has only been around for the last 20 million? Crazy!
People always wonder why they have that funny looking nose that looks like a hammer on the front of their face. Scientists say it’s for both increased binocular vision and it helps them to change direction quickly in the water. Since more than 90% of the food they eat are small fast swimming fish, their big nose acts like a wing, creating lift and other forces to help them feed.
Their nose is also full of pores and special cells that give them a superpower. They can sense the electromagnetic fields of other fish and sea creatures from really far away. It helps them find hidden food and is more powerful our most advnced technology. Amazing!
